Photoshop Tutorial - Sharpen Your Photos

Give your photos a sense of sharpness!! There's always tons of different ways to achieve a certain look in Photoshop. But today I'll share with you one of my ways to sharpen your photos to create a crisp, and clear image. For this tutorial I'll be using Photoshop CS3 (You can also apply this technique with any version of Photoshop that you have.)....

Select an image.
I'll be using this one. It was taken by me at a local public park and you can use mine as well for practice.

Click on photo for bigger version.

Let's begin
Open your image in Photoshop. Duplicate your image. For a shortcut press Control + J on a PC or  Cmd + J if you have Apple. Another way to do is, go to your Layer > Duplicate Layer..., go ahead and click ok when a pop up appears. You should notice a new layer in your Layers Palette.

New layer.

Let's use a filter...
Let's use a filter called High Pass! This is the main trick, so go to Filter > Other >> High Pass...
For this image we'll go for a radius of 4.0 pixels. Depending on your image, select a radius where some of the details are visible. Click ok, and you're going to end up with a gray image.

Change the blend mode.
For the blend mode in the Layers palette, you can choose any of these: Overlay, Soft Light, or Hard Light. For this image I selected Overlay. Now it's sharpened! You will see the difference but if you feel like it's way too sharp you can always bring down the opacity. I'll bring mine down to 80%.

Sharpened image!!
Basically that's all! Go ahead and Flatten your image. Do so by going to Layer > Flatten Image. Just for a boost of color I went ahead to Image > Adjustments >> Auto Color.

  1. Hey sweetheart
    Great blog by the way!!
Im a fan of photoshop and spent many times messing around with images I took. The only problem was, was that I didn't know exactly what I was doing and so gave up after a couple of months. The program I used was a trial so didn't cost anything to purchase.
Im really pleased to have found someone who knows photoshop and has put up some good articles on what to do with all the different buttons etc. Please do more of these as Ill be reading and putting them to good use. I haven't got a full works of photoshop yet, have no idea which one to purchase, but when I do Ill put your tutorials to good use and show you the end results if you like :)

Thank you so much, Big Hugs
